Frequently Asked Questions

I am on the waiting list for On-Campus Housing. What should I do?
Decide if you want to look at off-campus housing as a permanent solution for the year, or if you may want to move to campus if your name comes up on the waiting list. If temporary, consider a month-to-month lease to allow flexibility.
Can I buy meals and eat on campus?
Yes, anyone may purchase food at Valley Dining and the Library Café. Use cash or put dining credit on your Cat Card for faster service.
What do I do if I need furniture?
Some apartments may be furnished. If not, check garage sales, discount stores, or Facebook Marketplace. Coordinate with roommates to pool resources.
I won’t have a car. What transportation is available?
UC Merced students can use the university shuttle system, CatTracks. Merced County Transit (The Bus) also serves Merced County and nearby Stanislaus County.
My financial aid was calculated for living on-campus. Now what do I do?
Visit the Financial Aid Office on the 1st floor of the Administration Building as soon as you know you will live off-campus. Cost estimates vary for on- vs. off-campus living.
What advice would you give a first-time renter?
  • Familiarize yourself with listings on the off-campus site.
  • Choose your residence carefully, considering transportation, safety, and proximity to friends.
  • Do not rush signing a lease or assume details can be fixed later.
  • Choose roommates carefully and discuss responsibilities before signing.
