Mireya Contreras is a third-year Psychology Major with a minor in Writing. She was born in Mexico but migrated to Merced, California, at age 15. She is the oldest sibling and a first-generation student. Mireya aspires to attain a doctoral degree in either Clinical Psychology or Developmental Psychology and work with children and families while also spreading awareness/consciousness of the emotional and mental health within immigrant/undocumented communities. Coming from an immigrant background herself she became aware of the challenges that immigrant youth face in their pursuit of Higher Education, and now as an intern for the Ascending Scholars Mentorship Program and a team member within the Office Services for Undocumented Students, she hopes to be able to support and strengthen undocumented immigrant and mixed-status immigrant student’s personal wellness and self-esteem that is often stigmatized by those who do not understand the plight and challenges of immigrants.
